REACH and RoHS Regulations

Polyonics polyimide label materials are compliant with REACH & RoHS initiaves set forth for the electronics manufacturing industry

About REACH

REACH is the Regulation for Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals. It entered into force on June 1, 2007 to streamline and improve the former legislative framework on chemicals of the European Union (EU). REACH places greater responsibility on industry to manage the risks that chemicals may pose to the health and the environment. In principal REACH applies to all chemicals: not only chemicals used in industrial processes but also in our day-to-day life, for example in cleaning products, paints as well as in articles such as clothes, furniture and electrical appliances.

REACH Objectives

  • Improve the protection of human health and the environment from the risks that can be posed by chemicals
  • Enhance the competitiveness of the EU chemicals industry, a key sector for the economy of the EU
  • Promote alternative methods for the assessment of hazardous substances
  • Ensure the free circulation of substances on the international market of the European Union

About RoHS

"The Lead Free Initiative" The use of lead and other hazardous materials has gained attention in the electrical and electronic equipment world. Two Mandatory directives exist today: Restriction of Hazard Substances (RoHS) and Waste of Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE). July 1, 2006 was the slated deadline for compliance.

RoHS- specifically restricts or bans the use of lead, among other hazardous chemicals used in manufacturing process of electronic and electrical equipment like electronic assemblies. The hazardous materials are shown below:

  • Lead (Pb)
  • Mercury (Hg)
  • Cadmium (Cd)
  • Hexavalent chromium (Cr6+): Used in chrome plating, chromate coatings, and primers
  • Polybrominated biphenyls (PBB): Flame retardant in plastic
  • Polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE): Flame retardant in plastic
  • Bis(2-Ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP)
  • Benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP)
  • Dibutyl phthalate (DBP)
  • Diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP)
