REACH is the Regulation for Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals. It entered into force on June 1, 2007 to streamline and improve the former legislative framework on chemicals of the European Union (EU).
REACH places greater responsibility on industry to manage the risks that chemicals may pose to the health and the environment
In principal REACH applies to all chemicals: not only chemicals used in industrial processes but also in our day-to-day life, for example in cleaning products, paints as well as in articles such as clothes, furniture and electrical appliances.
REACH Objectives
“The Lead Free Initiative” The use of lead and other hazardous materials has gained attention in the electrical and electronic equipment world. Two Mandatory directives exist today: Restriction of Hazard Substances (RoHS) and Waste of Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE). July 1, 2006 was the slated deadline for compliance.
RoHS- specifically restricts or bans the use of lead, among other hazardous chemicals used in manufacturing process of electronic and electrical equipment like electronic assemblies.
